I had a job where one of the professors was a tireless campaigner against hiring overweight people or smokers (I was both at the time) because he felt these people caused the greatest loss of productivity, due to taking more sick days. Yet this weasel was a militant anti-abortion activist, and used to SNEAK OUT of his office frequently to attend demonstrations. It was an open secret within the department that he was only working half the time and giving his grad students the short end of the stick in order to further his political agenda.

I know that's entirely anecdotal, but I always think of it when I hear these claims. Statistics can be used, with great accuracy, to determine what large groups of people will do. They cannot predict, at all, what AN INDIVIDUAL will do - making policies and decisions based on trends penalizes every person in a group for what one person MIGHT do. From which opinion you can also tell how I feel about insurance companies.

Oh, nice. Like getting a job when you are overweight isn't difficult enough. And I'm sure the report doesn't actually say that but the FAT SCARE is what gets press these days.
