Damn those Yalies. They’ve done this to me before. They post a controversial blog item and then screw up the link on it.
Anyways, the item says this:
A free research paper, provided by Leade Health, a group that focuses on health coaching in the workplace, claims that obesity is the leading cause of employee productivity loss.
A Google search turned up a link to the Leade press release. But if you follow the link, it’s not at all clear that the paper says that obesity is “the leading cause of employee productivity loss.”
And IMO, this theory is counterintuitive to anyone who actually works.

I think the biggest cause of employee productivity loss is BOREDOM. We get bored, we start chatting or surfing…

Oh, nice. Like getting a job when you are overweight isn’t difficult enough. And I’m sure the report doesn’t actually say that but the FAT SCARE is what gets press these days.

I had a job where one of the professors was a tireless campaigner against hiring overweight people or smokers (I was both at the time) because he felt these people caused the greatest loss of productivity, due to taking more sick days. Yet this weasel was a militant anti-abortion activist, and used to SNEAK OUT of his office frequently to attend demonstrations. It was an open secret within the department that he was only working half the time and giving his grad students the short end of the stick in order to further his political agenda.
I know that’s entirely anecdotal, but I always think of it when I hear these claims. Statistics can be used, with great accuracy, to determine what large groups of people will do. They cannot predict, at all, what AN INDIVIDUAL will do - making policies and decisions based on trends penalizes every person in a group for what one person MIGHT do. From which opinion you can also tell how I feel about insurance companies.
