So the comment spammers have found me. Sigh. While it’s easy enough to delete comment spam, I guess it’s worth experimenting to see what I can do to keep that manageable. First effort: installing the autoshutoff plugin.

If you’re not a hard-core TV addict like me, Oprah’s show may not be in your normal DVR rotation. If not, you may want to make an exception for Monday’s show (May 1st) which will feature Dr. Mehmet Oz (of YOU: The Owner’s Manual fame).
The topic: his 90-day live longer, feel younger plan.
I expect […]

It is day six since I gave up Diet Coke (BTW, that post drew a record number of comments here!). I’ve been drinking iced tea, so I haven’t wound up with a major caffeine headache.
Anyways, so far so good. The jury is still out, as this habit is one that’s proven tough to stick with […]

I just upgraded my blog software, and as part of that process, wound up updating the feed. Nothing’s changed in those older posts; I’ll always use the “Update” convention when I change posts in a meaningful way.

Damn those Yalies. They’ve done this to me before. They post a controversial blog item and then screw up the link on it.
Anyways, the item says this:
A free research paper, provided by Leade Health, a group that focuses on health coaching in the workplace, claims that obesity is the leading cause of employee productivity loss.
A […]

It’s a slow day at work (we’re moving this weekend to new office digs, so most stuff is packed up), so I’m gonna sneak in an at-work post.
Over on BreadAndMoney.com, Richard Morris (pointer courtesy of Jimmy Moore) shares his personal perspective on his weight loss:
For decades our obsession with quantitative analysis, manifested by our need […]

It’s time. I hate to do it, but I simply must, must give up Diet Coke.
This is gonna be really hard. I don’t remember when I started the serious Diet Coke habit (probably when I started working at Burger King at 16), but it has been a serious habit for nearly thirty years.
I first […]

Oh, this item from today’s Huffington Post is really depressing:
[It] is stunning to learn that the Department of Agriculture has had data since 1981 showing dramatic declines in the nutritional content of modern fruits and vegetables.
According to the data, half the major nutrients tracked by the department from 1950 to 1999 showed significant declines — […]

The other day, I read an interesting post on “slow burn” exercise over on Dr. Michael Eades’ (Protein Power) blog. He writes:
It appears from these statistics that you can’t have it all. You can’t stay in shape and keep your body from wearing out after you’ve put a few years on it, or so it […]

I’m really tickled by seeing posts from other bloggers (like Amanda and Wendy) who are, like me, making a bigger point of focusing more on nutrition and less on weight loss and/or dieting.
I don’t know why this hasn’t ever clicked before, but perhaps it was because I was frankly far more obsessed with the whole […]

Okay, so here’s the followup inertia post I promised the other day.
I’ve been thinking about this for quite a while, and have been meaning to post something about it for a month now, ever since coming across this post from Rantings of a struggling fat chick:
HOW do I change my mindset so that […]

I don’t do New Year’s Resolutions, and I long ago gave up giving up things for Lent. But there’s something about spring, especially here in DC, that inspires me.
I lived nearly twenty years in Boston, so a New England fall still has to be my favorite season, but spring in DC is pretty close. […]

I love serendipity. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been looking at the paradoxical issue of supporting both fat politics and weight loss. Today’s topic on Oprah was part two of have you let yourself go? (see this post re part 1) and I had a bit of an “a ha” re the paradox.
Today’s […]

Today’s Diet Blog has an entry about YADB (yet another diet book) with a healthy eating focus: Eat, Drink, & Weigh Less.
Looks like a sensible book with good science behind it. That said, a commenter on Diet Blog sums it up pretty well:
Good advice, but it’s the same information that a hundred other books give […]

So if you’ve been here before, you know that I’ve been struggling to articulate why I’m not more anti-weight loss (for example, see why I weigh myself). Curiously, even if I’m not anti-weight loss, I am against dieting as a weight-loss tactic.
Seems like an unlikely position? Well, read on!
Today, I came across a […]

Post-recovery, I started to try and respond to the most recent comment in the intellectual dishonesty thread. I typed up a few paragraphs, and debated about a comparison to religion and abortion before thinking better of it, and just trashed my response.
But watching yesterday’s Oprah got me thinking about this in a different way. […]

Okay, I must be really late to the party, as grape tomatoes have apparently been around for years. Well, they have become a new staple for me since I started eating the SuperFoods Rx way.
It turns out that tomatoes are a really super food:
In the area of food and phytonutrient research, nothing has […]

Over on the Weight of the Evidence, Regina dings the AHA for taking the position that lowering trans fats in the diet is an acceptable position (compared to eliminating them). I just love what she writes at the end, and note that this applies to more than the issue of trans fats:
By refusing to support […]

Thanks all for the well wishes! I’ve been home for about 24 hours and am surprised to be feeling remarkably well and mostly pain-free. They sent me home with serious pain meds and something for nausea, but I haven’t needed either; I’ve just been doing the monster Motrin (800mg) every six hours.
The procedure […]

Things are going to be quiet here for a few days. I’m heading off tomorrow to have my fibroids fixed. It’s a relatively non-invasive procedure (I’m having the uterine artery embolization), but I’ll be kept overnight for pain managment.
I’ll be home sometime Friday, but I’m not expecting to be up to blogging much for […]

Ugh. What a weekend! I don’t know if it was something going around or whether it was something I ate, but I spent most of Saturday in the bathroom exploding out both ends. Sunday it was just the runs, and Monday, I regretted having yogurt for breakfast. Duh!
Well, a couple of immodiums later, I seem […]
