UltraMetabolism special offer

Posted March 21, 2006 at 10:37 am

Oh, I’m really doing this with misgivings, as this has all the appearance of plugging a diet. But, as I mentioned briefly over the weekend, I caught Mark Hyman on PBS basically doing his version of the Wayne Dyer, Andrew Weil, Neil Perricone “I wrote a book and now I’ll tell you all about it as a great marketing gimmick.” Yep, it’s a great marketing tactic, with a dash of social impact thrown in.

That said, I must admit that at first glance, I’m impressed with Hyman’s UltraMetabolism program. While he has “weight loss” written all over it (rather than “health”, another marketing tactic no doubt), from what I’ve seen, this comes really close to describing my approach to “choosing health.”

I still plan to post a longer writeup, but thought I’d pass along the special offer that Hyman’s PR machinery has put together to launch the book.

Basically, if you buy three copies from Amazon and forward your Amazon email to them today (March 21st), you can download a bunch of PDFs and AV files that support the main book. The premise behind requiring three copies is obviously to help them shoot up to the top of Amazon’s best seller list. But the cost is just $15 (4o% off list), so it’s not like they are gouging folks.

I bought the three copies, and plan to give the two extras to my sisters. I’ve downloaded all the extras available (the videos aren’t online yet, and two of the off-site extras aren’t available). I’m looking at the 108-pg companion guide, and it’s got some nice features in it (like the cooking chart for beans and grains).

So, keeping in mind that this book has “diet” written all over it, that there’s way too much “war on obesity” rhetoric, and that I haven’t actually read the book (I just saw the PBS special), I thought I’d pass this offer along in case others were interested in a whole foods, healthy eating approach. Ordering today does get you some seemingly useful extras. [NB: I am not connected to the author in any way and have no financial incentive in passing this along.]

Once I get the book, I’ll write up more.

I am looking forward to your comments on the book. I went to the website and found that one can download a PDF of the first chapter for free. Apparently he has “Seven Keys” which will be explicated in later chapters. in the first chapter he’s definitely playing my song, but I can’t tell if he has anything concrete to say in later chapters or whether it’s all blah-blah. Here is a quote I like: “…telling someone who’s overweight that all he or she has to do is eat less and exercise more is like telling someone who’s poor that all he or she has to do is make more and spend less. These kinds of simple equations ignore many factors.” I want to kiss him, in a deep and meaningful way, just for that one statement.

Yeah, I don’t agree with him on every point (which I’ll explain in a followup), but it’s a good start! For others, here’s the link to the preview Marla mentioned.
