Persistance, revisited

Posted March 17, 2006 at 7:44 am

My favorite quote in the world has to be this one (which I’ve already posted here once):

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan ‘Press On’ has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.
Calvin Coolidge

I thought of this again because some recent quotes from Renee speak to the same issue.

It takes as much stress to be a success as it does to be a failure.
– Emilio James Trujillo

The race is not always to the swift, but to those who keep on running.

I think of my compulsive overeating as a predominantly physiological problem that’s exacerbated by psychological stuff (oh, and of course, decades of dieting and misinformation), and I’ve been looking for a way out for a long time.

Quotes like these are inspirational to me. I hope you like ‘em too. Thanks Renee!

Those are great. I especially like the second one from Renee’s blog, because for me, it’s seriously about plodding along, doing what I know I need to do, and getting back to it if I stumble a little along the way.

I like this one: “Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.” – Carl Sagan

    I like that!

That Renee is one smart chickie. I also re-posted the quote about “The race is not always to the swift…”.

    Beth,
I’m just wondering, since I can’t seem to “get it” myself…what got you to the moment when overeating ended and the new lifestyle began? I mean, the real moment, the light bulb that you knew would never burn out?
