Weight loss and men versus women

Posted October 19, 2005 at 12:57 pm

Okay, it’s Wednesday, which means it’s time to complain about last night’s episode of The Biggest Loser. Over on Anonymous Fat Woman, Nicole posts about it as well, and she raises the issue I’ve complained about before: the men versus women thing is a train wreck. It’s just not fair.

The good news is that it looks like next week the teams merge. And hopefully we won’t see this on TBL3 (assuming NBC is monitoring board threads like this one).

I did some more Google-surfing, but it’s hard to find real medical support for the idea that men (especially these guys) have an easier time. Most of the links that come up are the anecdotal kind of posts…like this one.

Anyways, here is another explanation for why it’s easier for guys from an old episode of the View (my comments in italics):

Why Men Lose Faster

  • Women have more weight to lose. Not applicable in TBL; the guys are all much bigger.
  • Fat distribution is different in men and in women. Men’s fat tends lie in the abdomen. Women’s weight is carried in the breast, butt and thigh area. These areas hold on to the fat, which makes it a lot harder to lose. This is very apparent on the show this season, and is the same point that this article makes.
  • Men have more muscles. Muscles burn more calories. I think this is a big factor. I’ve tried to find contestants’ body fat percentage so that we could see just how much more muscle mass the guys have, but no luck. But trust me, these guys are getting a whole lot more bang for the buck than the much smaller ladies.
  • Men have realistic weight goals. They don’t worry. Agonizing over losing weight will cause you to produce hormones that promote fat storage. Not relevant? Or is it?
  • Men have higher metabolic rates, which means they burn more calories every minute of the day. Well, this one is just restating the point above about mens’ muscle mass, since metabolism is largely related to that.

Interestingly, they calculated that it would take Joy Behar 15 days to lose one pound, and her male producer just 3 days.

All this said, I will not be surprised when a guy wins this whole thing. Not that I’m going to be horribly disappointed, as I like most of the guys on the men’s team. But I just don’t see us having a woman win this in a competition against men. There’s a reason why the only sport that men and women compete together without controversy is equestrian.

Of course, I do think that the experience is worthwhile for the women. They all seem to be saying that they didn’t really care about the $250K; the fact that they used the show to turn their lives around was the real pay-off.

But just for principle’s sake, I’d certainly prefer then that people either not get kicked off (so that people who don’t stand a chance get the whole three month experience) or I’d like to see both a male and a female winner.

I’m with you on this one all the way. It’s ridiculous that any of the contestants are kicked off, the refrigerator going dark is absurd and the comment “you’re not the biggest loser” almost insane. Why this show thinks it needs to copy from Survivor, I don’t know. This show would be awesome if there were two teams of men and women separately challenged, separately weighed and separately rewarded. With more of them in it for the full time, more issues would be raised and revealed and everyone would be a winner. No losers at all. But, last time I checked, I don’t have any pull at the network. :)
